AUSTRALIA’s fight against rising obesity rates is turning to boxer briefs.
With the Australian Government introducing a new law in March to encourage people to wear boxer shorts as part of a healthier lifestyle, the idea is gaining popularity.
But Dr Peter Halliday, a professor of physical activity at the University of Tasmania, says it’s not necessarily a bad idea to wear your boxer shorts to work or school.
“The idea of wearing a pair of boxer shorts is to look more professional,” Dr Halliday said.
“You look like you are having fun and it can help keep the body warm and comfortable.”
Dr Halliday says wearing boxer shorts at work is more efficient and more effective than wearing a suit.
“It is less likely to catch on, it doesn’t get on the back of your neck, and it is also a good way to avoid wearing a hat and being in front of a computer,” Dr Hilliday said, adding it’s better to wear a pair to school.
But he warns against wearing boxer briefs while working, as they could get caught on clothespins or shoes.
“If you are in a hurry you could easily get caught in the machine or get your foot caught,” Dr Paul Fennelly, a senior lecturer in physical activity and health at the Australian National University, said.
Dr Fennery says the benefits of wearing boxer-style shorts to the office outweigh any downsides.
“A good pair of shorts are going to have a good impact on your posture, the amount of work you can do, and you can be comfortable,” Dr Fenniness said.
He says wearing them outside of work can be a little more tricky, however, because it could also get caught.
“I do have a couple of friends who wear them at home and I’m very sceptical about the quality of them, but I do think they are going be a good addition to a gym or work out,” Dr Peter Hilliday told the ABC.
“They look good and they fit well, so why not?”

“People who have a boxer-like look in their workplace, who are not wearing a lot of other layers, feel happier and have more energy,” Dr Michael Fennies research director, said in a statement.
“What we found was that the people who were wearing boxer jeans and trainers and had less overall body fat were significantly happier, healthier and more active than the people in the same situation wearing boxer pants.”
